Where to Stay in Paris

Where to Stay in Paris

Choosing where to stay in Paris can change your whole trip.

Paris is not huge, but each neighborhood feels very different. Some areas are romantic and quiet, others are better for nightlife, shopping, families, or first-time sightseeing.

For a first visit, I usually recommend staying somewhere central, walkable, and well connected by metro.

Here is how I would choose.

Oui, exactement. Pour les petits budgets, il faut citer les chaînes simples et fiables, parce que beaucoup de voyageurs ne cherchent pas forcément un boutique-hotel : ils veulent juste propre, bien placé, pas trop cher.

Best for Small Budgets: Simple Hotel Chains and Well-Connected Areas

If you are traveling on a smaller budget, I would look first at simple hotel chains in well-connected areas.

In Paris, budget does not always mean charming. Sometimes the smartest choice is a clean, practical hotel near a metro station.

For small budgets, I would check:

ibis budget
Simple rooms, usually better prices, good for travelers who mostly need a clean place to sleep. Accor has many ibis, ibis Styles and ibis budget hotels across Paris. (Ibis)

ibis Styles
Usually a little nicer than ibis budget, often with a more modern design. Good if you want something simple but not too basic.

B&B HOTELS
A practical budget chain with several hotels in Paris and near the city edges. Good for travelers who want essential comfort and controlled prices. (B&B HOTELS)

Motel One Paris-Porte Dorée
A good-value option if you do not mind staying slightly away from the most central tourist areas. It is near Porte Dorée, with metro access into the city. (motel-one.com)

Adagio / Aparthotels
Useful for longer stays or families because some rooms include a kitchenette. This can help save money on breakfasts and simple meals.

Best areas to check:
République, Nation, Bastille, Montparnasse, Porte Dorée, Porte d’Orléans, Place d’Italie.

Approximate hotel prices:
€80–€130 per night for very simple hotels.
€120–€180 per night for better budget hotels.
€150–€220 per night for nicer budget-friendly options.

My advice:
For a small budget, I would rather choose an ibis, B&B HOTEL or aparthotel inside Paris or very close to a metro than a cheaper hotel far outside the city.

Saving €30 per night is not always worth it if you lose 45 minutes every morning and evening.

Before booking, always check:

  • distance to the nearest metro;
  • recent reviews about cleanliness;
  • noise at night;
  • air conditioning;
  • elevator;
  • private bathroom;
  • how long it takes to reach the places you want to visit.

For a first trip, a simple hotel in a practical area is usually better than a pretty hotel in an inconvenient location.

Best Overall Area: Le Marais

Le Marais is one of my favorite areas for a first trip to Paris.

It is central, beautiful, lively, and easy to enjoy without planning too much. You have cafés, boutiques, museums, small streets, restaurants, and easy walks toward Notre-Dame, the Seine, and the Louvre.

It feels very Parisian, but not too quiet.

Best for: first-time visitors, couples, food lovers, shopping, walking.

Less ideal for: travelers looking for large rooms or lower hotel prices.

Approximate hotel prices:
€180–€350 per night for a good 3-star or 4-star hotel. More in high season.

Hotel ideas:
Hôtel Jeanne d’Arc Le Marais
Hôtel Caron de Beaumarchais
Hôtel Jules & Jim
Le Pavillon de la Reine, for a luxury stay.

Best for Couples: Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Saint-Germain is classic Paris.

It has elegant cafés, galleries, bookstores, beautiful streets, and easy access to the Luxembourg Gardens, the Seine, the Latin Quarter, and the Louvre.

It is one of the most romantic areas to stay in Paris, but it is not cheap.

Best for: couples, romantic trips, first-time visitors who want a polished Paris feeling.

Less ideal for: tight budgets.

Approximate hotel prices:
€220–€450 per night for a comfortable boutique hotel.

Hotel ideas:
Hôtel Le Six
Hôtel Madison
Hôtel Artus
Relais Christine, for a luxury option.

Best Practical Area: Opéra / Grands Boulevards

This area is very practical.

You are close to Galeries Lafayette, Printemps, Opéra Garnier, many metro lines, restaurants, shops, and easy transport connections.

It is not the most romantic part of Paris, but it is convenient, especially if you want shopping, sightseeing, and simple metro access.

Best for: shopping, short stays, first-time visitors, practical travelers.

Less ideal for: travelers looking for quiet village charm.

Approximate hotel prices:
€150–€320 per night.

Hotel ideas:
Hôtel Malte Astotel
Hôtel 34B Astotel
Hôtel Saint-Pétersbourg Opéra
Hôtel Dress Code.

Best for Families: Eiffel Tower / 7th Arrondissement

The Eiffel Tower area is calm, safe-feeling, and beautiful.

It works well for families because the streets are wider, there are parks nearby, and the area feels easier in the evening.

The downside is that restaurants can be touristy near the Eiffel Tower, and the area is not always the most convenient for nightlife.

Best for: families, first-time visitors, travelers who want iconic Paris.

Less ideal for: nightlife, cheaper restaurants, trendy cafés.

Approximate hotel prices:
€200–€450 per night.

Hotel ideas:
Hôtel La Bourdonnais
Hôtel Le Walt
Hôtel Muguet
Pullman Paris Tour Eiffel, for Eiffel Tower views.

Best Value Area: Montmartre

Montmartre is charming, romantic, and usually better value than central Paris.

You get village streets, Sacré-Cœur, cafés, views, and a more local feeling. It is especially nice if you like walking and don’t mind hills.

The downside: it is farther from some major sights, and some streets near Pigalle or Barbès can feel less comfortable late at night.

Best for: couples, budget-conscious travelers, second-time visitors, charm.

Less ideal for: travelers with mobility issues, heavy strollers, or people who want to be very central.

Approximate hotel prices:
€120–€250 per night.

Hotel ideas:
Hôtel des Arts Montmartre
Terrass’’ Hotel
Hôtel Monsieur Aristide
Maison Souquet, for a luxury boutique stay.

Best Budget Area: Montparnasse

Montparnasse is not the prettiest area in Paris, but it is practical and often better priced.

You have good metro connections, restaurants, cafés, train access, and easier hotel prices than Saint-Germain or Le Marais.

It is a good choice if you want comfort without paying luxury prices.

Best for: budget travelers, longer stays, practical trips.

Less ideal for: travelers dreaming of postcard-perfect Paris outside the hotel door.

Approximate hotel prices:
€110–€230 per night.

Hotel ideas:
Hôtel Le M
Hôtel Aiglon
Hôtel Lenox Montparnasse
Drawing House.

Best for Nightlife: Latin Quarter / Bastille

If you want evenings out, bars, casual restaurants, and a lively atmosphere, look at the Latin Quarter or Bastille.

The Latin Quarter is more central and historic. Bastille is more local, younger, and better for nightlife.

Best for: young travelers, friends, nightlife, casual food.

Less ideal for: very light sleepers or travelers wanting a quiet luxury stay.

Approximate hotel prices:
€130–€280 per night.

Hotel ideas:
Hôtel Europe Saint-Séverin
Hôtel des Grandes Écoles
Hôtel Fabric
Maison Bréguet.

Areas I Would Choose Carefully

I would be careful with hotels that look cheap but are far from the center.

Some outer areas can be perfectly fine, but for a first trip, the time lost on transport is often not worth the money saved.

Be especially careful if the hotel is:

  • far from a metro station;
  • outside Paris city limits;
  • near a major train station but very cheap;
  • in an area you don’t understand well;
  • attractive only because of the price.

A cheaper hotel can become annoying if every day starts and ends with a long commute.

My Simple Recommendation

For a first trip to Paris, I would choose:

Le Marais if you want the best all-around location.
Saint-Germain if you want romance and classic Paris.
Opéra if you want convenience and shopping.
Eiffel Tower area if you travel with kids.
Montmartre if you want charm and better prices.
Montparnasse if you want value and comfort.

My personal first-choice area for most visitors is Le Marais.

It gives you the best mix of beauty, food, walking, central location, and atmosphere without making your trip complicated.

Quick Price Guide

Budget hotels: around €100–€160 per night.
Good 3-star hotels: around €150–€250 per night.
Good 4-star hotels: around €220–€400 per night.
Luxury hotels: often €500+ per night.

Prices can be much higher during fashion weeks, holidays, summer weekends, major concerts, and big events.

Always check:

  • if breakfast is included;
  • if the room has air conditioning;
  • if there is an elevator;
  • how close the hotel is to the metro;
  • recent reviews about noise;
  • the final price with taxes.

Final Thought

Do not choose your Paris hotel only by price.

Choose the area first, then the hotel.

A well-located hotel can make your trip feel easy. A cheaper hotel in the wrong area can make every day more tiring than it needs to be.
